Da Wave - Splashworld in Avignon

Are we in Avignon? Yes, on The World's Largest Artificial Wave, or so says the advert. Splashworld Provence is a large water slides amusement park which opened last year. Da Wave, actually located in a separate area of the park, is associated with a bar and restaurant. While the park closes at 7pm, the bar remains open until 1 am. The general public can only have a go at certain times of the day, supervised and assisted by an instructor. Each surf session lasts 30 mn with 6 people taking turns on the wave*.  At other times and especially at night, the wave is reserved to experienced riders whose performances become an attraction for the people at the bar.
The bar has a distinct beach shack style - completely artificial of course.
* The cost is €20 per person if you only take the ride on Da Wave, €15 if you take it in conjunction with an entry to the Splashworld park. You must book your session in advance by phone on 04 88 84 72 17 or 07 76 78 11 83. You can't book online and unfortunately their website is in French only: they're not making things easy for non-French visitors, are they? If you become addicted you can become a member by buying a pass for 32 or 64 sessions.

How unusual! Merci for the translations. I understood most of the French this time. One day, maybe I'll write my comment in French!

I drive past the park every day and had never bothered to stop. But I have to say that my son Oli, a keen bodyboarder who lives in NZ, was besides himself when he heard about the wave when he arrived last week, so I just had to take him there. This time we only had a look around but Oli has booked a session for Monday morning so we'll going back for some serious fun. I'll be there with my camera of course :)

I hadn't mentioned it but the exact location of Splashworld is near Monteux, a village half-way between Avignon and Carpentras. The water slides are very visible from the speedway and it's well sign-posted.
Unfortunately the entry fee won't be your only expense : you'll also have to pay extra for the car park (hourly rate),for the case where you'll store your personal belongings (€3.50 for the day) and for your food and drinks : you're not allowed to bring even a bottle of water into the park. Be warned, they'll take it away from you or they'll expel you if they catch you eating your own food in the park. Some comments by previous visitors in 2015 and 2016 tell some pretty ghastly stories of the sort!

Interesting that the owners affected a Chicago accent (da) for a surfing park. No surfing in Lake Michigan. And, by the way, the area of central Michigan we have been visiting where our son and family have moved was a very pleasant surprise.

My son tried it and said it has nothing to do with a real wave. He was really surprised - and not really in love with it. In the end he prefers the real thing and I'm glad he does.
The three times we went we saw the owner's son (16 or 17 probably?) riding the wave along with guests and you can tell he's spending most of his days and evenings there. Of course he's now really good at it but in the end it feels so vain, so artificial ! Nothing will beat getting out to the beach in the morning, checking out the surf, tide, currents and wind conditions, getting into the sea and paddling your way out to the surf, being on the look out for the right wave, working out to be in the right place at the right time and riding a particular wave that will always be unique.
And after a good session, getting back to the beach with a sense of accomplishment, of having had a go at something amazing, measuring yourself against the elements.
How can Da Wave compete with that?
