Rain and tears

Some Christmases are more joyful than others. Our dear mother drew her last breath on December 23rd at 7:00 pm. She had seen her four daughters and all of her grand-children, said goodbye to her best friends and died peacefully listening to Bach chorals and holding my sister's hand. Music and love, the two pilars of her life, supported her till the end.

At the end of the day

Back in Provence today I warm up to the sun, so desperately absent in Paris. But if the sky is blue the spirit is far from festive. On December 23rd I'll be going back to Paris for a Christmas that'll be my mother's last. We'll all be around her. She promised to hold on until then. Beyond that I doubt she'll carry on much longer. But she continues to look to the future by choosing musics, poems and hymns for her funeral. It's a wonderful project to share with her, she's always been such a good party planner and this way we'll know we'll be doing things the way she wanted them. She considered playing Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings but later rejected it: too sad. "You'll  bring everyone to tears", said my sister! I agree. Do you ?

On the road. Another piece of my research work around rainy blur.
Yes there was a star in the windscreen. Perhaps does it lead to Bethlehem?

Café parisien

Paris

Across from Gare de Lyon station, L'European café in the rain. You've got to be grateful for electricity which turns a dark and cold night into magic. Are we aware of the luxury of it all?

Le sac jaune

Never leave your luggage unattended in a train station, it could be destroyed by an antiterrorist squad. Of course if you keep it in sight because you're photographing it, you'll be right.
I'm in the Avignon TGV station, off to Paris again.

Today Friday 12th of December will see the return to the church of Beaumes-de-Venise of a spectacular 17th century painting which had been away for over a year for restoration. This piece of art is not only remarkable by its large format and quality but also by its story: in 1628 when the bubonic plague was ravaging the region, the city council of Beaumes vowed to dedicate a painting to the Virgin Mary if she protected the village. Since only half the villagers died, the survivors held their vows. The painting, clearly devided in two parts, top and bottom, depicts the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in the clouds above while below, the villagers pray her to spare them. If you look at the detailed images you'll see men to the left, women to the right, some already displaying signs of the disease : bleeding abscesses and dark eyes. Isn't it amazing to think that in those dreadful times the only response a city council could come up with in the face of a major threat to public health was prayer?
The painting and two smaller ones will be presented to the public this afternoon at 5:00 pm at the local Tourist Office, where the specialists in charge of the restoration will explain how they worked. It should be fascinating. No doubt that the locals who have known the painting so dark that its subject was hardly clear will be thrilled by its beauty and clarity now. The three paintings will remain on display at the tourist office for a week before being transported to Notre Dame d'Aubune chapel where they originally were. If you're around, do come and see them!

Painting class - portrait

Portrait session at my painting class in Carpentras last Monday. Above, my work at an early stage during one of the sitter's breaks. Below, another student at work. Learn more about the painting classes here (in French). As always the exercise was challenging but most enjoyable. I'm always impressed by our teacher's patience and dedication.

Aubune in grey

Notre Dame d'Aubune, Beaumes de Venise
From the almost naked vineyards emerges the now familiar church spike of the little chapel of Notre Dame d'Aubune. We've had more rain this autumn than I can ever remember and it's raining again today. Thick clay clings to your boots if you attempt to go for a walk. This particular plot of vine was replanted a couple of years ago - notice how the new pickets are aluminum instead of wood as they used to be.

Nothing much. Just a bunch of berries emerging from the morning mist.
