World Kindness Day

After having lunch at a friend's place a few days ago I saw his two teenage sons fiddling with a fly they'd caught buzzing behind the window. It took me a while to understand what they were up to until they showed me: they had tied a hair around the fly's head and were now holding it on leash. Oh dear, the things that boys do! I come from a family of girls and my sisters and I never played that sort of game. Did you?
-------Addendum a few hours later : the above post went up at midnight and what do I hear on the radio this morning? Today 13 November is World Kindness Day. Oh dear, what have I done? How ironic!

Nathalie, your blog is going to get a bad reputation with animal rights activists! First the cat on the barbie and now a fly on a leash?! Oh my.
;-D

Hey louciao, none of my making!!!
(but then being a non-opposing witness is just as bad I'm sure...)

I owe to the truth to say that when I was 10 to 12 yearls old I spent a lot of time observing how spiders span their webs. Occasionally I would catch a small insect and throw it in the web to see how the spider reacted, how quickly it would move in to wrap its prey in silk before biting it to death. But that wasn't cruelty, these were SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS.

It has been such an amazing week for your blog. I’m on the edge of my seat with anticipation as I wait to see what you have in store for us in the future.

Oh my, I would never have had the patience or the desire to do something like this. Your photo, on the other hand, is amazing.

I cannot imagine how they were able to do this but bravo to those creative boys!

Oh my God, I didn't play that sort of game. Not even a game is it? I don't like flies but even so this is so cruel.

Friday the 13th massacre!

They must have very agile fingers to be able to tie a hair around a fly's head!

I don't know how they were able to do this - and you to take the photo! But, you are right, this is definetely not the kindest thing to do! As everybody else I have of course ocasionally killed a fly or two when they got a bit too enervating, but... This is perhaps why I never became a scientist!

My brother used to do similar antics! He'd tie string or thread around the leg of June bugs and watch them fly in circles.
There are other things he'd do, but in honor of World Kindness, I'll say no more.
=-)

Haha, my husband used to do this as a kid (well, teenager!) in school and tie a small note on the other end of the hair, which would then be carried high around the classroom! No documentary evidence though, so he was thrilled with this photo..... his reply? "Glad to see the ancient arts are being kept alive, hahahaha".....

Adultes, on fera bien pire!

How ironic...indeed to be truly
honest with you, I'am at
a lost for words.
Oh! Friday the 13th I was ill on that day and missed this post.

I think that photo is a good comment for Kindness Day, as in even flies should not be treated cruelly. Though it is kind of hard to leave them alone when they are buzzing around your food.

Nathalie H.D. said...
